Medicine Matters diabetes


Amar Puttanna, MBChB MRCP (UK) MRCP Diabetes and Endocrinology, is a Diabetes Consultant in the West Midlands, having graduated from the University of Birmingham. He is particularly interested in education, having won multiple teaching awards from the University of Birmingham and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and previously been on the Royal College (MRCP) Part 1 examining board. In 2018 he won the RCP Excellence in Patient Care Award for outstanding contribution to the profession.


Dr. Puttanna is a former chair of the Young Diabetologists and Endocrinologists Forum (YDEF), a national registrar organisation aimed at developing and representing the specialty and its trainees. He works closely with the Royal College of Physicians and was one of the first Chief Registrars, a unique role aimed at developing leadership and management skills in senior trainees. He is published regularly and taken part in consensus discussions regarding diabetes management. He is also involved in writing national guidelines, specifically on older adults with diabetes.


Dr. Puttanna's interests are in cardiovascular disease, novel medications for patients with diabetes, diabetes management in the older adult; specifically cognitive impairment via his DIADEM project which won the Quality in Care (QiC) Diabetes Awards 2018. He regularly delivers talks to a wide variety of audiences from students to general practitioners as well as secondary care teams and has presented his work at various national and international meetings.
