Numeracy should be a core skill in nurse development

Judith Roberts , Wallasey

Two recent articles (learning zone March 14, art&science March 21) make the point that numerical accuracy is needed when prescribing, and when calculating a patient’s fluid balance. There are many other examples of the need for accurate calculations in nursing – drug administration, working out bed occupancy rates, or just finding out how much or how little an extra 1.5 per cent will add to your wage.
