Dr Phil Zeitler is Professor of Pediatrics and Clinical Sciences and Head of the Section of Endocrinology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Dr Zeitler is Chair of the Department of Endocrinology and Medical Director of the Children’s Hospital Colorado Clinical Translational Research Center, the pediatric research unit of the Colorado Clinical Translational Science Institute. Dr Zeitler is Editor-in-Chief of Pediatric Diabetes and a past President of the Pediatric Endocrine Society.
Dr Zeitler completed his medical degree and a PhD in physiology at Duke University in Durham North Carolina. He completed residency in pediatrics and a post-doctoral fellowship in physiology at the University of Washington, followed by fellowship in endocrinology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Dr Zeitler was Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s until 1996, when he moved to the University of Colorado. He was promoted to Professor with tenure in 2008 and became Head of the Section of Endocrinology in 2011.
Research in Dr Zeitler’s group focuses on understanding obesity, insulin resistance, renal function, and diabetes in adolescents, as well as the physiology of insulin resistance and cardiorenal risk in special populations, such as those with Klinefelter syndrome, Turner syndrome, CF-related diabetes, PCOS, and transgender youth. Dr Zeitler has been Chair of TODAY, an NIH-funded, multi-center longitudinal study of adolescents with type 2 diabetes since 2003. He is also Co-investigator in the RISE consortium that has provided the first head-to head comparison of the pathophysiology of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in youth and adults and has explored ways to improve β-cell function in adolescents with prediabetes and recent-onset type 2 diabetes. Dr Zeitler is the lead author on guidelines for the management of type 2 diabetes in youth by the International Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) and Co-Chair of the ADA guidelines for the evaluation and management of type 2 diabetes in youth.
