2020, Journal of Infection and ChemotherapyCitation Excerpt :To date, white blood cell (WBC) counts and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels are the two-routine infection markers that have been widely applied in clinical determinations of infection [1,2]. However, a study by Armstrong of 189 patients with diabetes mellitus noted that 56% of patients had normal WBC counts and 84% had normal neutrophil counts at the time of hospital admission [3]. A meta-analysis by Simon et al. demonstrated that the nonspecific inflammatory marker CRP was increased during almost all inflammatory reactions but exhibited very slow kinetic changes and was only weakly associated with the severity of infection [4].
