Nicola Milne

Community Diabetes Specialist Nurse working within the CODES (COmmunity Diabetes Education and Support) Team in Central Manchester

Nicola Milne qualified as a registered general nurse in 1988 and as a midwife in 1991, moving into primary care in 2002, where she worked as a practice nurse. In this role Nicola developed a  special interest in diabetes with a key focus on ensuring effective, accessible diabetes was available to patients.

Nicola Milne represents practice nurses on three national diabetes committees, as a Practice Nurse Representative for the Diabetes UK Council of Healthcare Professionals, Committee Member of the Primary Care Diabetes Society and recently as Chair of The Diabetes UK Professional Conference Organising Committee in Liverpool 2019.  Nicola  is also a Queen’s Nurse, a title which is given to nurses who have demonstrated a high level of commitment to patient care and nursing practice, having been nominated by several of her patients and colleagues.

Nicola Milne has presented poster abstracts at the Primary Care Diabetes Society (PCDS), Diabetes UK and European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Conferences. She has become increasingly involved in educational activities supporting community nurses and has published articles on her work in chronic kidney disease and diabetes. She has also led and presented award-winning projects relating to diabetes prevention, pregnancy and hypoglycaemia awareness.

Nicola Milne is an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Diabetes Nursing and the Journal of Diabetes and Primary Care.

Nicola Milne is committed to the values of being a practice/community nurse and the importance of being first point of contact. She believes this role, as part of a multidisciplinary team, is crucial in supporting prevention, education and optimal management of diabetes.
