The Endocrine Society of India (ESI) celebrated its fifteenth anniversary at the Golden Jubilee ESI Conference (ESICON), held at Bangalore, India, from December 10th to 12th, 2021.

The most prestigious endocrine and diabetes event of the country, ESICON brought together the leading researchers and clinicians of India and Nepal on a physical platform. The high prevalence of diabetes in the region found reflection in the choice of topics discussed at ESICON 2021.

Diabetes is a multifaceted syndrome, and its diversity was addressed during the conference. Unique features of diabetes during various phases of life were covered: the neonatal period (Bharathi Kolla, Ramaiah Medical College and Hospital, Bangalore); childhood (Manisha Gupta, Regency Hospital, Kanpur); young adulthood (Shriraam Mahadevan, Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre, Chennai); and also in women (Usha Shriram, VHS Hospital, Chennai) and the elderly (KAV Subrahmanyam, Visakha Diabetes and Endocrine Centre, Visakhapatnam).

Speakers also tackled challenging clinical situations such as hyperglycemia in noncritical care settings (Anantharaman Ramakrishnan, Magna Centres for Obesity, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Bangalore), differentials of diabetic neuropathy (Ravi Yadav, Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research, New Delhi), insulin autoimmune syndrome (CM Batra, Apollo Hospitals, Delhi) and hypoglycemia-associated autonomic failure (Sambit Das, Hi Tech Medical College, Bhubaneswar).

Sambit Das gives the highlights of his ESICON presentation on the etiology and management of hypoglycemia-associated autonomic failure (8:12).

The etiopathogenesis of diabetes is an exciting sphere of research, which is constantly changing. Pramila Kalra (Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, Bangalore) explained the perspective of dysglycemia-based chronic disease, while S Chowdhury (IGPGMR, Kolkata) described the central role of mitochondria in the pathogenesis and management of diabetes. The expanding spectrum of diabetes, as a part of larger syndromes like sarcopenia (Deep Dutta, Cedar Superspecialty Clinics, Delhi), immune checkpoint inhibition (MVV Muraleedharan, Consultant, Chennai) and heart failure (Venkatesh TK, Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Bangalore) was explored.

Diabetes found mention in the abstracts selected for oral presentation, with young researchers sharing their findings on maturity-onset diabetes of the young (Javaid Ahmad Bhat, Government Medical College Srinagar), ambulatory glucose profile in children and adolescents (Ambica Tandon, SGPGI, Lucknow), and new onset-diabetes after liver transplant (Kaushal Sheth, Yashodha Hospital, Hyderabad).

A wide range of drugs is now available to manage diabetes, and various speakers highlighted the rational role of oral drugs, insulin, and incretin-based therapy, including oral semaglutide, in diabetes care. Medical nutrition therapy (Mala Dharmalingam, Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore) and biosimilars were given their due places, thus completing a holistic overview of diabetes management.

The enthusiastic discussions that followed these presentations underscore the high level interest in diabetes care in India. As diabetes care evolves, and improves, we must be able to keep pace with latest trends and advances in the field. ESICON 2021 has ensured that we remain updated, and empowered to deliver the best of services to our patient.
