Theresa Smyth

Theresa Smyth, MSc, BSc (Hons), PG Cert (Ed) qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1990 Birmingham. She has been the Nurse Consultant in Diabetes, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust since 2006.

As Nurse Consultant, her role incorporates strategic planning, developing, managing and leading diabetes nursing services within the Trust; providing education programmes to diverse audiences within the Trust and higher education institutions; and leading clinical practice and research development.

Theresa holds an honorary position of Senior Lecturer at Birmingham City University where she develops, co-ordinates and delivers post-registration and post-graduate courses, as well as contributing to the enhancement of the provision of undergraduate diabetes education.

Her clinical interests are preconception, pregnancy, multi-cultural issues and end of life care in patients with diabetes. She has published various articles and book chapters on a range of diabetes-related topics.

As a mother of two young children, Theresa wonders if free time is what people who aren’t taxiing their children around have, though she likes to tend to the garden, play piano and ride her new and first ever bicycle when they are otherwise occupied.
