Maureen Wallymahmed is currently employed as a Nurse Consultant at Aintree University Hospitals, Liverpool, UK. Her interest in diabetes goes back to 1985 when she was a ward sister on a diabetes ward. Her current role involves clinical care of people with diabetes, management of the diabetes nursing team, service development, and research. Clinical interests include cardiovascular risk reduction in patients with type 1 diabetes and the education and management of patients on insulin pumps. In recent years, her role has expanded to include the provision of community-based specialist diabetes care. She currently leads a team of 20 diabetes nurses providing clinical care, education, and advice to people with diabetes in a variety of settings (inpatients, outpatients, and community-based services). Maureen has over 80 publications in peer-reviewed journals and is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Diabetes Nursing. In 2012, she was a awarded a PhD (University of Liverpool) for her thesis "The assessment and management of glycaemic control and vascular risk in people with type 1 diabetes."
