medwireNews: A safety study finds that hyperglycaemia is the most common adverse event in patients with Type 1 diabetes using a closed-loop insulin delivery system on an outpatient basis.
During 14 weeks of use, including a 2-week run-in period, there were 28 device-related events among the 124 patients in the study, report Richard Bergenstal (International Diabetes Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA) and colleagues in a research letter in JAMA.
All events were mild and resolved at home. There were no cases of severe hypoglycaemia or ketoacidosis; rather, the most frequent events were hyperglycaemia (six cases) and severe hyperglycaemia (17 cases). Most cases of severe hyperglycaemia (>300 mg/dL) were caused by the infusion set or software or hardware issues.
The patients in this study were aged between 14 and 75 years, but the team notes that a similar study in children is ongoing.
