Medicine Matters diabetes


Amy Hess Fischl, MS RD LDN BC-ADM CDE, is an advanced practice registered dietitian nutritionist and certified diabetes educator with over 20 years’ experience in the Chicagoland area. She is currently the diabetes education manager at the University of Chicago for heir American Diabetes Association Education Recognition program in the department of endocrinology. She has created a unique partnership with her team highlighting the benefits of working with a diabetes educator by collaborating directly with the endocrinologists during patient clinic appointments to provide diabetes self-management education, medical nutrition therapy and assessment and recommendations based on insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor downloads. She works exclusively with people with type 1 diabetes with over 75% on insulin pumps and CGMs. 


She actively volunteers for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the American Association of Diabetes Educators and the American Diabetes Association. She also speaks internationally on all diabetes topics, especially nutrition, technology and diabetes and the role of the diabetes educator in diabetes care. She was part of the writing team for the Joint Position Statement on Diabetes Self-Management Education for Diabetes and the updated National Standards for DSME. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling to historic locations (her last visits included a hike up Mt Sinai and St Catherine’s Monastery in March and a dive in the balmy 34 degree F/1 degree C Silfra fissure in Iceland), creating metal art sculptures and diving with sharks.
