Clipper Young

Clipper F. Young, PharmD, MPH, CDCES, BC-ADM, BCGP, APh, is a board-certified clinical pharmacist specializing in diabetes management. He is an associate professor at Touro University California College of Osteopathic Medicine.

As an academic and community-based clinician, Clipper aspires to devote his career to lifelong learning as a clinical pharmacist, a public health advocate, and an educator. Being in a unique position working with an interdisciplinary diabetes team at Touro University California College of Osteopathic Medicine as a faculty member, he has integrated his education, training, and passion for pursuing his dream in preventing and tackling diabetes. His primary roles include recommending pharmacotherapeutic options for optimizing diabetes management and for cardiovascular risk reduction, intensifying or de-intensifying treatment based on patient's current status, offering diabetes education, educating students and healthcare providers on diabetes-related topics, assisting the development of a community-based, diabetes-and-hypertension-screening program (the Mobile Diabetes Education Center), leading/directing a pharmacy-focused home health program (the Pharm2Home Initiative), and conducting clinical research on the psychosocial aspect of diabetes management.

As a faculty member, he teaches clinical pharmacology and pharmacotherapy in diabetes and biostatistics/epidemiology to medical students as well as a diabetes-related experiential curriculum to a team of interprofessional students. As a member of an interprofessional diabetes team, he conducts clinical and outcomes research focusing on the management of diabetes and explores ways to prevent and tackle diabetes aiming to improve population health. He also works side-by-side with diabetologists on the team to deliver diabetes care under collaborative practice agreements, allowing him to adjust pharmacotherapeutic plans. In addition, he utilizes his public health skills to develop, implement, evaluate, and lead – at different degrees -- the two community outreach programs of the team: MOBEC (Mobile Diabetes Education Center) and Pharm2Home Initiative (a pharmacist-led, chronic-disease-and-medication management program delivered via telehealth and home visits between medical appointments at the clinics).

He has been a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (CDCES) since 2016 and obtained his Board Certified-Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM) in 2017. With interest in geriatrics, he became a Board-Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (BCGP) in 2019. During the pandemic in 2020, he obtained his Advanced Practice Pharmacist (APh) license.

He has published over 25 peer-reviewed journal articles, with most of them focusing on diabetes and its management. Some select publications include review articles on diabetes medications, microvascular complications and management, diabetes and travel, as well as original research projects on diabetes distress and diabetes numeracy and literacy in underserved populations. He also co-authored a book chapter on nonnutritive sweeteners.

In 2017, he was the recipient of the Kim Higgins California Diabetes Educator of the Year Award from the California Coordinating Body of the AADE (American Association of Diabetes Educators). In 2018, he was selected as one of the AADE Rising Star Award recipients. He served as the chair for the Diabetes Self-Management Education & Support (DSMES) Interest Group of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) from July 2019 to June 2021.

A career in academia with public health and clinical practice fulfills his curiosity in sharing knowledge with others and his desire to serve the community, form bonds with others, and continue a lifelong-learning journey. Academia is a profession that matches determination with talents, ability, and background. He eagerly embraces the chance to integrate the knowledge and insights that he will continue to acquire along the way into his practice as an academic, public health advocate, and clinician.
