In the final named lecture of the conference – the Banting memorial lecture – Andrew Boulton outlined 40 years of research leading to our current understanding of diabetic neuropathy.

The hot topics sessions, on the last day of the Diabetes UK professional conference, covered areas including medical prevention and reversal of type 2 diabetes, the role of the gut microbiome, blood pressure targets, and adjunct therapies.

Solomon Tesfaye, Consultant Physician at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Honorary Professor of Diabetic Medicine at the University of Sheffield, delivered the Arnold Bloom lecture on diabetic neuropathy. 

Thursday’s contrasting named lectures featured insights into the beta cells at the onset of type 1 diabetes, the expanding role of the incretins, and the role of the dietician in empowering diabetes patients to successfully manage their condition.

Day 2 of the Diabetes UK 2017 Professional Conference saw talks on diabetic retinopathy and glucose variability, and explored the link between diabetes and mental health further with insights into how type 1 diabetes-related eating disorders can be identified and managed.

The opening named lecture of the conference – the Rank Nutrition lecture – was presented this year by Nita Forouhi, from the University of Cambridge, who gave an overview of the often contradictory evidence linking diet to diabetes risk.
